I am an organismal evolutionary biologist that uses an integrative biodiversity genomics approach to study and understand how biological diversity is promoted and maintained. I am currently an NSF Postdoctoral Fellow in Dr. Erica Larson’s lab at the University of Denver studying speciation and hybrid zone dynamics. I received my PhD in Quantitative Biology in 2021 from the University of Texas at Arlington, where I worked in Dr. Matthew Fujita’s lab. Prior to that I earned my BS from Duquesne University (2011) and my MS from Indiana University of Pennsylvania (2016). Through my research, teaching, and outreach, I aim to equip the next generation of evolutionary biologists with the knowledge and skills they need to address future problems in the field, with the goal of fostering a diverse, inclusive, and equitable environment needed to succeed and solve these challenges. You can find a copy of my most up to date CV here.
Through my research, teaching, and mentorship I strive to be a strong advocate for underrepresented individuals in STEM, especially LGBTQIA+ individuals. As a cis white man, my journey has been easier than some, but I have still had challenges along the way. Throughout my undergraduate and part of my graduate career I did not always feel a sense of belonging in research/academia, primarily because I lacked LGBTQIA+ mentors. When I finally was afforded out mentors, it opened my eyes to the fact that I belonged in academia and could be out/my authentic self. One of my biggest goals as a researcher/teacher is to be an ally/mentor to LGBTQIA+ students and to ensure that the next STEM generation has diverse role models, help the current generation recognize that they are not alone, and create opportunities for community connections and greater visibility within biology and STEM.
Outside of academia and science, I am an avid hiker and generally love being in nature, though sometimes I prefer to be in the confines and creativity of a theater where I may be found designing sets or acting in shows (see more here). I also enjoy simply spending time with my partner and our three cats or traveling (when we can) to fun and exciting places around the country.
